BEST OF 2012: PALMISTRY

Apart from releasing his lush I Swear mixtape, last year saw the London producer Benjamin Keating, who goes by the moniker Palmistry, collaborate with Triad God on the excellent NXB mixtape, and release some cool remixes. That mix he made for our series was pretty special too. These are a few of Keating’s 2012 favorites:

My favorite artists from 2012 were Felicita and Triad God. Both people I know well and work closely with.

Felicita and I started to make beats at the same time when we lived together back in the summer of 2010. We used to work on tracks together as Felicita & Palmistry but then began releasing tracks as solo artists as time went by. In 2012 I felt he really started to find his own sound and I’m pretty excited to see what he produces in the next few years. He comes from a noise/experimental background and he doesn’t compromise his aesthetic or sound to please others which I really respect. I wouldn’t do him justice trying to describe his music: Felicita’s Soundcloud.

On Triad God – his voice is so deep from the tone, flow, melody and content. I’ll never forget the firs time we recorded together opening up my laptop and pressing record on Ableton just using the laptop mic and Vinh sang “Sun Hing J”. Was a real special moment.  Here’s the original mix for that track:

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you must already be familiar with Palmistry (hopefully you’ve also listened to his masterful recent guest mix). The latest from him is this remix of “Bodyweather” by London three-piece Sunless ’97. Palmistry lends his eerie touch to the upbeat original version, which can be found on Body Weather/Azul single, out now on Not Even and available for purchase here.

NC GUEST MIX#57: PALMISTRY

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Palmistry is the moniker of the London-based producer Benjamin Keating, who is hopefully just about to break through. Last month saw the release of his excellent mixtape I Swear, which you can check out here. He is currently working on “LP worth of new material” for his Palmistry project, preparing a collaboration with Haleek Maul and working on the new Triad God record for Hippos in Tanks. A busy man indeed! In between all that he found some time to put together an impressive mix for us. ’Chung & Dangerous Mix’ features twenty-four mostly obscure, rare and/or hard to find songs, stylistically ranging from electronic and contemporary classical to East African hip-hop and Korean traditional music, all kept together by Palmistry’s trademark gloomy downtempo approach. Lay low rhythms:

PALMISTRY – CUT EP

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

If you liked Palmistry‘s ‘(RIP Southhouse) Cutt’, a track we posted awhile ago, you should definitely check out his new Cut EP. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s that post.) The man is “probably putting this project on hold for a while” for some reason, and focusing on a Cantonese spoken word/rap project Vinh Ngan. Alright. Anyway, here’s the opening track, ‘Black Creps’; stream the whole EP here.

PALMISTRY – (RIP SOUTHHOUSE) CUTT

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Here’s something new from the mysterious London artist Palmistry. ‘(RIP Southhouse) Cut’ is a real gem, self-described as “influenced a lot by r’n'b of The-Dream and the darker sounds of the UK dance scene”. Sounds something like that! A few months back we posted Palmistry’s awesome collaboration with Felicita, ‘Closeureyes (breakupsex)‘, might wanna check that too if you haven’t already.
