NC GUEST MIX#42: LITANIC MASK

Monday, November 21st, 2011

If you’re sitting there wondering who the fuck are Litanic Mask, do yourself a favor and get acquainted with Kenna Jean and Mark Evan Burden because their band just happens to be one of our discoveries of the year. This is their first mix, and it’s not half bad! The dominantly experimental/goth/ industrial introduction doesn’t really prepare you for all that follows. Obscure soul mixed into contemporary r’n’b, followed by mixing synth pop into dub reggae into Swans into minimal techno. Things get even crazier around ‘Dancing on My Own’ / ‘Always on My Mind’ combo. Did I mention it all sounds perfectly smooth? As if I didn’t know I’d love this when I spotted one of my fave Depeche Mode songs on the tracklist, along with some Light Asylum, John Maus and Plastikman. Virgin mix:

NC GUEST MIX#41: HIGH PLACES

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011
We at No Conclusion know ALL about High Places. Unfortunately, we can’t share that knowledge with you. The footage of our detailed interview is now forever lost thanks to a really crappy recording. We kept them hostage in the backstage for an hour for nothing, and yet Mary and Rob were kind enough to put together a little something for our guest mix series. And boy are we glad they did!
ICP’s ‘Can’t Feel My Knees’ makes for a perfect intro, followed by a little bit of everything. The mix is a compact blend of experimental and electronic music, some obscurities plus an occasional dance gem, spiced with a slight touch of the eighties and a few discoveries (How did I miss out on that Invisible Conga People 12“? Also, those folks from Chile are pretty chill). Just the way we like it! Mixed Places:

NC GUEST MIX#40: ELA ORLEANS

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

It’s been months since our last guest mix, but we’re back to the feature with a mix by UK-based Polish musician Ela Orleans.
“There are some things I grew up on and music I have been going back to these days in search for inspiration and guidance in finding perfect sound ha ha.” Hah, and that’d be a weird mixture of hip-hop, avant-garde, jazz, swing, soul, psychedelic, experimental, classical, pop and electronic music. There are a few exclusive tracks too. “I am working for Clan Destine Records and big part of my life is dedicated to the label now. Some tracks on the mix are coming from its upcoming releases. There are some gems I would like to point out – Spastic Joy, Young Offenders, ASSS and KVB – true talents and great personalities”, she said. Welcome to the world of Ela Orleans:

Ela Orleans also shared some details on two upcoming releases. Her new full-length Mars Is Heaven should be out by the end of September on La Station Radar/Atelier Ciseaux. “There are 8 tracks, more experimental, more composed and integral without being million miles away from what I have been doing so far. I still am far from the idea of having a band but more and more attracted to orchestration and musical space.” Another release set for this fall is the remix LP Ela Orleans and The Prophets on Clan Destine Records. “It will consist of remixes of my past work made by the finest artists I met in the last few years, there is a lot of contributors working on stuff right now – some serious surprises and a few predictable choices – all genuinely and carefully selected.” Looking forward to it!

NC GUEST MIX#39: NOWA HUTA

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Here’s our new guest mix! Made by Nowa Huta, the mysterious London-based dark dance production unit.
No touching story this time, just a few lines on the mix: “When we put this mix together we wanted it to echo some of the emotional qualities we’re interested in mapping out and exploring in our own music; loss, longing, obsession and isolation all rendered as seductively as possible.  Hopefully this mix points towards those ideas.” Yep, that would be a pretty accurate description. We hope you’ll enjoy the mix as much as we did:

NC GUEST MIX#38: MI AMI

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

When we were setting up that Sex Worker guest mix with Daniel Martin-McCormick, we talked about Mi Ami doing a guest mix somewhere down the line. Unfortunately, the guys haven’t had a chance to make a mix recently, BUT they dug out this crazy mix they made back in 2006. Here’s what Daniel had to say about it: “This is a mix Damon and I made in the fall of 2006. We had met a few months before, ending a stretch of loneliness and aimlessness that had taken over my life after moving to SF a year and a half prior. At that point, our band was just the two of us (as it is again now), and to say we had no idea what we were doing is a true understatement. We practiced in a closet, me jamming loops on Ableton, playing occasional guitar and keys and singing, while Damon worked the percussion. We started with a snare drum, sans snare, and then added in the following order: roto toms, hi hat, rack tom, shakers, maracas, and a cymbal before eventually purchasing a kick drum in August of 2007. Practice tapes circa the weeks surrounding this mix are 100% unlistenable. But I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this proto-dj excursion, and how much of the vibe remains intact today. Most of the gamelan, Sandy Bull and minimal techno was me; most of the italo, asian pop and (surprisingly) Polish men’s choir was Damon. We called it the Deth Kult Mix after some favorite Mission St graffiti, and passed it on to Kat from Donuts as a demo. We ended up opening for Tussle in the spring and she and Damon started dating and the next five years passed so quickly in a warmly-glowing blur of life/love/learning/jammin’.” A beautiful story with a happy ending! NC GUEST MIX#37: BELONG

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

We are honored to present you a guest mix by Belong, the duo of Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones, who have made one of our favorite records of the year so far. Common Era is out now on Kranky, we suggest you get it (here).
The mix was curated by Mike Jones and it features mostly experimental electronic music and 80′s new wave, synth pop, post-punk, pop and minimal synth, as well as a few obscurities. We assume that this love for new wave music might have had something to do with the shift in sound from drone to pop displayed on their new record. Mix era:

As for the guest mix – “It contains songs that I wish I made and some that I have remixed”, says Moore. An excellently mixed collection of fine songs, including some of the NC faves such as Fever Ray, Balam Acab and Boards of Canada, plus probably my favorite song by The Beach Boys, and more. NC GUEST MIX#35: SLEEP ∞ OVER

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011
This week’s guest mix brings us the dreamy stylings of SLEEP ∞ OVER. Stefanie Franciotti said on the mix: “I mostly listen to the same songs over and over again until I’m sick of them, so these are it. I’m still listening.”
So let’s see about these songs: a weird Japanese psyh pop tune, some Durutti Column, Nick Drake’s mom (!), a few psychedelic jams, a 90′s dance hit, Cocteau Twins, an opera track and Chris Isaak. AND not one but two Kate Bush songs one after the other, only she flips the order on ya! Whoa. Also, love those Nick Nicely and Twisted Wires tunes. MIX ∞ OVER:

NC GUEST MIX#33: SEX WORKER

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Here’s a mix by Sex Worker a.k.a. Daniel Martin-McCormick, perhaps better know as one half of Mi Ami. We’ll let him do the talking: “I started making this mix with the idea of just using songs that directly influenced Waving Goodbye. But that’s pretty boring. I’d say it’s about 50/50, half tracks that made a big impression on me while working on the record, and half jams that are burning my mind now. It’s 45 minutes long because I recorded it on a cassette one morning last week before heading out on my dog walking route. When the tape stopped, I had to stop. The closing section is dedicated to everyone who didn’t make it out of the 80s. I wish I could have met you.” Wave goodbye:

NC GUEST MIX#32: WE LIKE CATS

Monday, February 21st, 2011

We like We Like Cats so we asked them to do a mix for our Guest Mix series. In case you need a reminder, the band is comprised of Honey Owens (Miracles Club, Valet), Eva Salens (Inca Ore) and Adam Forkner (White Rainbow). Here’s what Adam said on the mix: “Inspired by the cat show Sarah and I went to yesterday morning. There was this tiny Bengal kitten napping in his mother’s belly and he looked just like a tiny tiny cheetah, his spots were so purrfect. Also, exotic shorthairs, the longest cat in the world (Maine coon) was there, a very cute American short hair, and lots of other tuff lil dudes.” So We Like Cats really like cats. Some photos from their last year’s trip to the cat show, “just to get the idea of how tuff it is there”. The mix is a “live mix, complete with air horns, sirens, cat meows, very sloppy dubs and ‘rewinds’ and some tuff tuff tiger lion riddims”. Hope Snacks enjoyes this:
