Speaking of Atlas Sound videos, there’s a new “approved” video for the excellent Quick Canal, featuring Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab on vocals.
Oh, and that last virtual 7″ is also very good.
2009, ShdwplyThe Super Vacations are an East coast five-piece who have played shows with the likes of Gary War, Wavves and Teeth Mountain. I wish I could describe this release without using the terms “lo-fi pop”, “fuzzy”, “hazy” and such, but I can’t think of anything better right now. However unoriginal that might sound, I assure you these guys have some really fine and catchy tunes underneath all the fuzz.
Get Henry 7″ here. Their new full-length is coming out in January 2010, also on Shdwply Records.

Topaz Rags is the “late night downer trio” of Robedoor joined by Amanda Brown from Pocahaunted. Capricorn Born Again is their first full-length, out now on Not Not Fun Records. Considering the label they’re on, you know you can expect some druggy pyschedelia, only this time with some piano and trumpet instead of guitars. The folks at Boomkat labeled Topaz Rags’ sound as “chill-wave night terror”, I’d have to agree.
Get it from NNF.

Check out the new Daytrotter session with Cymbals Eat Guitars, it’s pretty good. The band played three songs from this year’s fine debut Why There Are Mountains (Wind Phoenix, Cold Spring, Indiana) as well as one unreleased song.
Stream/download the session and read another one of those nice Daytrotter articles at the Daytrotter site.

Black Feelings are a psychic noise/new wave three piece from Montreal. Apparently they’d describe their sound as “nightmare hippy music played at lightspeed and the sounds rising up from the infinite jewel marsh at dawn.” Now I don’t know whether that’s suppose to win you over or what, but I do know that I find myself drowning in an endless pool of blissed-out pop and chillwave and a nice healthy infusion of noise rock is a welcomed interjection. Straight off, they hit you in the face with a wall of sound comprising hard hitting drums, propulsive bass, shimmering guitar and chanting vocals, rounding it all off with keyboards. The self-titled LP is also their first full-length and it makes for a solid first effort. Then again, it might just be the anxious anticipation of the new Liars record on my part. Judge for yourselves.
Lost Rings pt 1
Gails
Golden Children
The record starts of promising enough, with Lost Rings providing a good hook as the opener, but gets a bit diluted as it progresses with the songs melting into one another a little to well. Although, it would be interesting to see where the band goes from here. I dub thee band to watch.
Oh and the creepy artwork comes courtesy of ex-Aids Wolf guitarist Chris Taylor.
In dire need of noise? Buy.
A fine day for Thrill Jockey. New releases by Mi Ami and Trans Am are now available for pre-order and they’ve announced signing Future Islands – their new full-length, In Evening Air, will be released in spring.
San Francisco trio Mi Ami recorded the new 12″ with Trans Am’s Phil Manley. It’s also their Thrill Jockey debut. Pre-order the Cut Men 12″ and stream both tracks here. The A-side is a live recording, the B-side is a dub that runs over ten minutes. Highly recommended.
Trans Am‘s What Day Is It Tonight?: Trans Am Live 1993-2008 is, you’ve guessed it, a collection of live songs, recorded between 1993 and 2008. It will be released as a double LP and a DVD featuring two complete live shows (Heidelberg, Germany 2004 and Chapel Hill, North Carolina 1993). It hits stores December 8 but you can pre-order it now from Thrill Jockey.
Norway is the first single off of Beach House‘s highly anticipated upcoming record Teen Dream. The band has been performing the song live for some time now – we posted a live video back in May. However, now you can download the proper album version. Norway 7″ will be released on 11th January 2010 and will be backed with exclusive track Baby.
Teen Dream drops on January 26th. It will “arrive packaged with a companion DVD featuring a video for each song on the album, each by a different director”. Can’t wait! Until then, you can check out some first impressions on Onethirty bpm.

We decided to put together a new feature on the blog where, instead of just the regular monthly NC mixtapes, you could hear mixes that some of the artists we’re listening to at the moment put together for us. L.A.’s Letting up Despite Great Faults are the first band we asked to do this and we’re absolutely thrilled they said yes.
The band brings you a mix of 11 laid back electronic and indie love songs perfectly blending into one another. We are really diggin’ this mix, hope you’ll like it too. Enjoy.

Letting Up have a self-titled debut full-length out right now on New Words which you can get through Amazon, Insound and iTunes. Their particular blend of dreamy bedroom pop is the perfect fit for fall. Catchy guitars, almost dancey beats and Mike Lee’s soft vocals coupled with shoegazey synths deliver enchanted melodies that make you feel all sorts of warm and wonderful.
