So the idea is this: a band records an A side as themselves and then, under a pseudonym, a B side that’s completely different from what they’d normally do, with two animals of their choice battling it out on the cover. So don’t be confused by the split bit – Gold Ether is in fact VOICEsVOICEs. They kick off the series, but will be followed by a 7″ from Foot Village and others. With the A side they deliver what we’ve come to expect of them – Tidal is “hauntingly beautiful” in all its droney dreaminess. The out-of-character In Armies still sounds like the girls, but a club friendly version of them. It’s much darker, with some killer beats to it. Gotta say, really diggin’ this.
The guys over at How to Fight Records will be holding a contest to win a free copy of the first in their “Animal Battles” 7 inch series featuring VOICEsVOICEs. You just have to “send [them] an illustration or photoshopped image of the most epic or ridiculous battle between two animals you can think of!” They’ll post the top 5 on their website and the author of the best one will receive the 7″. Neat.
Animal Battles Series Vol. 1 drops December 1. Buy it here.
Stereogum just posted this cover of MGMT‘s Time to Pretend. Digital Leather‘s Shawn Foree and Stephen Pope (previously of Jay Reatard) were talking about synths one day and Stephen mentioned that MGMT used the same machine on Time to Pretend as DL did on Modern Castles. They really liked the song so they decided to cover it: “We wanted to do a straight cover. No deconstruction needed. Just as long as it was lo-fi we were happy girls.”
Heard about this a couple of days ago but then all of a sudden the video was no longer available. Well, today it’s officialy out there and you can watch it below. Here’s what the directors of the clip, Jens Klevje and Fabian Svensson, said about the video: “Fever Ray and the song Keep the Streets Empty struck us immediately with it’s fateful sound and images of abandoned suburbia begun to grow in front of our eyes. We wanted to continue the journey that started in the former videos and our ambition was to catch the feeling in a very direct and true way and create a video where dream and reality intertwine.” Altough dark and eerie, this video is definitely less weird and creepy than some of the previous ones.
Fever Ray 2CD/DVD Deluxe Edition is out now on Mute, get it here. Fever Ray official site.
The noise pop duo from South London have a cool new video for the track Real Fighters. It appears on their debut album Ride Slow, out now on Upset the Rythm. Some nice animals and stuff:

This is a fresh feature on the blog where, instead of just the regular monthly NC mixtapes, you can hear mixes that some of our favorite artists put together for us. This time it’s Transformation Surprise, the solo project of Mary Pearson from High Places.
Regarding the theme of the mixtape she says it’s “music that inspires my solo music by process and intent. This is the kind of stuff I listen to when my inspiration well is running a little dry.” Maybe you’ll find it inspiring too. Who’d have thought Underworld and Cat Power could go so well together?
01. Tom Waits – Hoist That Rag 02. Bow Ribbons – Let Me Down Easy 03. Underworld – Something Like A Mama 04. Cat Power – I Don’t Blame You 05. Portishead – Hunter 06. Buffy Sainte-Marie – He’s A Keeper Of The Fire 07. The Dead Weather – I Cut Like A Buffalo 08. Marnie Stern – Patterns Of A Diamond Ceiling 09. Broadcast – Tears In The Typing Pool 10. Violeta Parra – De Cuerpo Entero
She hopes to put a release together sometime in 2010 and she also might be doing a film score. We’ll keep you posted. Check her out at Myspace.
