Watch the Liminals’ new video for their single The Swim. It was directed by Sebastian Rozenberg. Really dig the track, and the video is pretty good too.

HOLLOWS – HOLLOWS

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
2009, Plus Tapes/Addenda Records
01. Johnny Appleseed; 02. Shadows in the Dark; 03. Watch Out Sally; 04. Mary Goes to Law School; 05. Muncie, IN; 06. Skeleton Woman; 07. Do the Scarecrow; 08. Happy to Listen; 09. Touch-me-nots; 10. Love Will Find You; 11. Shrines

Chicago’s Hollows is three girls and two guys making garage pop. Off the bat, it doesn’t sound all that spectacular, but they actually manage to stand out in a sea of fuzzy lo-fi pop that seems to be everywhere these days. From cheerful cutesy ditties to equally catchy melancholic pop tunes. Granted, it’s not exactly seminal stuff, but there’s something to be said for their lovely girl harmonies and incredibly catchy hooks.

Johnny Appleseed
Muncie, IN

It was difficult to decide which two tracks to feature, but fortunately you can listen to the whole album on their labels’ sites. Hollows CS is out now on Plus Tapes, “only available directly from the band”. The vinyl is coming out on November 10 through Addenda Records. Pre-order the LP here.

FEVER RAY – STRANGER THAN KINDNESS [VIDEO]

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
It ain’t over, she’s not done yet. After having announced the final tour, Fever Ray drops yet another spooky video. This time for Stranger than Kindness (the cover of Nick Cave’s song), released on The Double Disc Edition of Fever Ray.
The video is directed by Andreas Nilsson, who happens to be the man responsible for the haunting Fever Ray live show. It’s not a surprise then that the video features costumes, masks, lasers, lamps and some other elements of the live show. Check it out:

TAMARYN – MILD CONFUSION/LIGHT SHADOWS 7"

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

True Panther Sounds, 2009
1. Mild Confusion; 2.Light Shadows;

This San Francisco based vocalist already has a couple of 7″s and an EP under her belt. Her music is absolutely gorgeous and I’ve no idea how I’m only hearing about it now. It’s dark yet dreamy, containing elements of shoegaze, goth and pop, and the vocals are simply stunning calling to mind the likes of Siouxie Sioux and Cocteau Twins.

Mild Confusion

Stream Light Shadows on Myspace.
The 7″ comes out December 9, but you can pre-order it HERE.
She’s got a full length coming out on Mexican Summer in 2010.

AHLEUCHATISTAS – OF THE BODY PRONE

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
2009, Tzadik
01. 2/3 Consensus on the Un-Finite Possibilities; 02. Owls; 03. Those with Guns; 04. Why Can’t We Be In Jamaica?; 05. Racing Towards the Hard Kernel; 06. Eastside Uptight; 07. Dancing With the Stars; 08. Total Nightmare in a Deep Dive; 09. Making the Most of the Apocalypse; 10. Map’s Tattered Edges

Following the last year’s reissue of their best record, the critically acclaimed The Same and the Other, instrumental math-rock beasts Ahleuchatistas return with a new album. Once again they shift from math-rock to free jazz to experimental post-rock in each song, occasionally featuring some catchy melodies. Also, the new drummer apparently fit in very well. This band is a must listen for math-rock lovers.

Yeah, something like that I suppose.

HECUBA – THE MAGIC [VIDEO]

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The duo of Jon Beasley and Isabelle Albuqueruque premiered the video for their new single The Magic off of this year’s charming album Paradise. It was directed by Isaiah Seret and Beasley, who explains “The way we write is a really visual process and we were already really interested in telling stories and creating characters with our music, so making these narrative videos was a really natural step…” Watch the video and read the full article on Dazed Digital.
The video is neat, altough the track isn’t one of the stand-outs from Paradise, in my humble opinion.
