Gateway Drugs is a new band comprised of Jeans Wilder, Pink Priest and Jen Paul/No Lakes. The two songs up on their Myspace page are hazy lo-fi ambient stuff, eerie and atmospheric. Sounds even lonelier and a bit darker than Jeans Wilder’s stuff.
By the way, Jeans Wilder also has a new song up, it’s called Late for Dinner. Stream.
New Gary War video, for Highspeed Drift off of Horribles Parade. It was directed by Jacqueline Castel, who also directed the video for Blank Dogs’ Setting Fire to Your House.[via]
Besides the Blank Dogs video, it also reminds me a bit of the video for The Fiery Furnaces’ Ex-Guru for some reason. And they all remind me of Kenneth Anger’s work. For some reason. And they’re all good. Hm!
Canadian producer/singer/songwriter offers his new album for free download for one week. The album is a collection of 30 short tracks, mostly instrumental hip-hop and downtempo. Oh and if you have no idea who this guy is, maybe I should mention that he worked with Four Tet, Madvillain and Caribou/Manitoba (providing vocals on 2003′s Up in Flames). Get Beep Tape from Stones Throw. Koushik @ Myspace.
2009, Wagon 01. Overboard (Off The Deep End); 02. Geode; 03. Diotima; 04. Passing Away
A new 12″ by Mark McGuire, John Elliott and Steve Hauschildt. This leaked a few days ago, can’t find where to buy it yet. It’s released on bands’ own Wagon label so keep an eye out on their site, as the record should be available for mail orders soon. Oh, by the way, it’s pretty good. Here’s the second track:
01. In Your Heart; 02. In Your Heart (Cereal Spiller Remix); 03. In Your Heart (Vince Clark Remix); 04. Strictly Looks
In Your Heart is the first single from A Place to Bury Strangers’ new record Exploding Head, which is dropping October 6 on Mute. Some more shoegaze goodness, backed by remixes which make the track even catchier and turn it into an electro-pop gem. Buy it. A Myspace to Bury Strangers.
2009, Captured Tracks 01. Rain on; 02. Twisted Tongue; 03. To Clean; 04. The Number
Insound says “Mysterious Woods bootleg. (…) Very limited, origins unclear.” Better get it while you can. Also available here with some more info revealing that this is “Woods material recorded for Radio Dijon in France in April 2009″. HOWEVER. Really like these stripped-down versions of songs. Three of them are taken from this year’s Songs of Shame and Twisted Tongue is from last year’s fine Woods Family Creeps. Take a listen:
I know this is all over the place already, but it’s just so good that I had to post it. One more thing! I would like to congratulate a certain someone who has finished their best of list a bit too early and missed to include this beauty, and has also managed not to include some non-Fever RayKarin-related videos that happen to be among my favourites of all time.
She’s also got an EP of remixes coming out on October 5th called Seven featuring – you’ve guessed it – SEVEN remixes. There’re some good ones. And friggin terrible ones too, but we won’t post those.
It appears that her current tour is also the final one and I feel really sorry for those who haven’t and won’t get to see her live. Really, really sorry. Fever Ray official site + myspace.
2009, Italians Do it Better 01. Montre Moi Ton Visage; 02. Mirroir Mirroir; 03. Don’t Call; 04. Dans Mes Reves; 05. Under Your Spell; 06. Colourless Sky; 07. If I Can’t Hold You; 08. Part II
Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy and Chromatics has a new project, called Desire. The other two members are Megan Louise and Nat Walker. Desire was formed when Johnny Jewel met singer Megan Louise in Montreal. “Completely blown away by her voice, Johnny Jewel decided to lock the doors on his Portland studio, and plant roots in Montreal…” Read the whole movie-like story in the ‘about Desire’ section on their Myspace page. I believe you all know about Italians Do it Better and Jewel’s previous projects, so I’ll cut the long story short – if you like Chromatics and Glass Candy, you’ll like this too. Get IIhere. Listen to the catchiest song on the record and one that didn’t make the cut for some reason.
Our post from few days ago kinda got deleted. I hope it’s ok to repost it now that two songs off of Hors d’oeuvres had been officially premiered (stream the other one here). So here we go: Tickley Feather, take 2.
2009, Paw Tracks 01. Muscles; 02. Sure Relaxing; 03. Don’t Call, Marylin; 04. Buzzy; 05. Trashy Boys; 06. Not a Drum; 07. Roses of Romance; 08. Fly Like an Eagle; 09. Club Rhythm 96 and Cell Phone; 10. Tickley Plays Guitar
New album by Annie Sachs a.k.a. Tickley Feather is coming out on Paw Tracks on October 19th. Featuring more beats as well as some hooks, it’s a more accessible affair than her previous effort, the last year’s fine self-titled debut. Not only is Hors d’oeuvres less atmospheric, it even has a few really catchy up-tempo tunes. Not to mention the appropriately titled closing track – Tickley Plays Guitar, which finds Sachs playing some riffs over the good old drum machine beat. Not to worry, it’s all still very charming and enjoyable. Tickley Feather @ Myspace.
01. We Are Water (Acid Girls Healthy Body Remix); 02. Nice Girls (Daisy O’Dell Remix); 03. Severin (Dark Party Remix); 04. Before Tigers (Pollyn Remix); 05. Nice Girls (Tommie Sunshine’s Pandemic Pandemonium Re-Touch)
Speaking of noise bands getting their songs remixed, Health and URB.com compiled some exlusive remixes of five tracks from Health’s new album. Read more about it and download them all over at URB website. By the way, Get Color is out now and anyone who buys it this week at one of these stores has a chance of winning the golden ticket. In case you’re not informed on the whole tickets thing, find out more about it here. Health Myspace.
2009, Scion Audio/Visual 01. Buzz in (Todd Edwards remix); 02. Buzz in (Mixhell remix); 03. Buzz in (Optimo remix); 04. Buzz in (Nosaj Thing remix)
Boris remixed? Boris, the good old Japanese experimental noise/metal band? Yep. Why not. While the first two remixers offer up-beat dancefloor versions of the song, Optimo and Nosaj Thing rework it in their own styles. Optimo stretches the 3-minute original to an almost 10-minute long track. And it sounds really good, as does Nosaj Thing’s hip-hop take on Buzz in you can download below.
