Friday, July 17th, 2009

2009, Manimal Vinyl

01. Paradise; 02. Even So; 03. Miles Away; 04. La Musica; 05. Extra Connection; 06. Tom & Jerry; 07. Everything; 08. Suffering; 09. The Magic; 10. Humanize
Duo comprised of Isabelle Albuquerque and Jon Beasley. “Using bass bloops, glitches, and a kitchen sink of instruments, Hecuba concocted an inventive type of music that blended electro, dub, experimental indie pop, and ’60s girl groups.”
“As comfortable on the dance floor as in the concert hall, Paradise moves from sparse, introspective moments to harsh, violent crashes and syncopated beats; from Ranchero trumpet blasts to full on orchestral pop and 50′s crooner electro-bop.” From The Blow to High Places to the Italians Do it Better bands.

DIGITAL LEATHER – FRESH SECRETS 7"

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

2009, Red Lounge
01. Fresh Secrets; 02. Happily Ever After; 03. On Saturday

Digital Leather is Shawn Foree with members of The Wongs, Reatards, Lost Sounds and Destruction Unit.
A recent post on their Myspace page says “DL record is done. It’s coming out in September on Fat Possum.” In the meantime, tease yourselves with this 7″. So, Digital Leather are a full band now it would seem, and not just while on tour. Newly based in Omaha, and managed by Jay Reatard. Fun picturing that guy doing serious businessy stuff.

SOUNDS LIKE
the whole gloomy electro/gay discotheque thing is over?
“Fresh Secrets is a tune in the Closed my Eyes direction. B-side consists of two older recordings: On Saturday and Happily Ever After featuring Devon Disaster.” The first track is still heavy on the synths but it sounds kinda mellow, while the second track is just pure garage pop. In any case a little change is good. Buy it and decide for yourself.

ZOLA JESUS – THE SPOILS

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

2009, Sacred Bones

01. Six Feet (From My Baby); 02. Crowns; 03. Sinfonia and the Shrew; 04. Sink the Dynasty; 05. Devil Take You; 06. Lullaby in Tongues; 07. Smirenye; 08. Clay Bodies; 09. In Hiding From the Crow; 10. Tell it to the Willow
Finally. “Sacred Bones is proud to present The Spoils from Zola Jesus. Hailing from the unsuspecting locale of Madison, WI, Zola Jesus—the alter ego of Nika Roza Danilova—occupy a sphere of sparse industrial rhythms, no-fi drones, and ethereal femme vocals. (…) The limited edition comes with screen printed outer sleeve, alternate cover art, insert and link for mp3 download.”

CIRCUIT DES YEUX – SIRENIUM

Monday, July 13th, 2009

2009, De Stijl

01. The First Day; 02. Visions; 03. Folk II; 04. Calling Song; 05. Swallowing Hearts; 06. A Siren; 07. Shedevil; 08. Paranoid; 09. Daylight; 10. Binding Feet; 11. Serenade to Sophia; 12. He Came From Orion
Circuit des Yeux is Haley Fohr from Indiana.
SOUNDS LIKE
“Lonely, I am so lonely”, says her Myspace page. Sounds somewhat like U.S. Girls. Or Zola Jesus if she was more into experimental folk. Pretty dark and a bit disturbing. Me likes.
“…It’s the sound of ‘issues’, the sound of ‘troubles’. You don’t get but one phone call and honey, the girl’s voice makes this message a bit rubbly anyway. Take the manic snorts of Captain Liberty, dissonant as chalk and the next moment as melodic as sharp yet slick, metal teeth. Take the mermaid, 1988, turn the tides, gently, gently away. Selected breath/silences/selected feedback. Take an argument you have here with an empty street while the memory of high traffic is leaking back. Sirenum has a real ‘spiritual food’ vibe and it’s fucking pain and pleasure relief in this real met en zonder sort of way. This world is her world, and pipe if you like it.” Buy it.

MIXTAPE#3

Monday, July 13th, 2009

[LATE NIGHT]
We planned on putting together some lovely summer mixes, which seem to be very popular these days, but, unfortunately, we got really busy lately plus the weather wasn’t all that “summery” either, at least not in our corner of the world. If you were fortunate enough to have sunny skies and are already enjoying summer in all its splendor, try some of these mixes. For the rest of us, here’s a summer-sunday-night-at-home mix. (There’s just something about Sundays and mixtapes…) Obviously, it should come in handy when we’re on holidays as well. Summer isn’t all about going to the beach and partying, now is it?
Featuring some more and less known tracks by Jeans Wilder, Gary War, Nite Jewel, Best Coast, City Center, Frankie Rose, Lotus Plaza, Dälek, Grouper, Nothing People etc.

KURT VILE – FALL DEMONS 7"

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

2009, Skulltones

01. Subliminal Message; 02. Crystal Crowns; 03. Summer Demons; 04. Society in a Riff; 05. Old Jay Pea
“Trippin’ the riffs between some catchy freedom rock and Fripptronics, Kurt is back with brand new songs on this single. Last year’s CD on Gulcher was a year end favorite and his recent west coast tour showed that the riffbag runs deep.”
Kurt says “i will have them [Fall Demons] at shows for a little bit so come up and see me sometime.” Check his Myspace for tour dates to find out where you can see him, or try and get the 7″ here.
By the way, his first full-length for Matador, Childish Prodigy will be released this fall.

PUMICE – PERSEVERE 7"

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

2009, Soft Abuse

01. The Dawn Chorus of Kina; 02. Open Up; 03. Pacific Ocean
Pumice is Stefan Neville, New Zealand lo-fi/psych pop/free folk musician.
“…in January 2009, Neville started work on a new batch of recordings. One of those found a home on the split single with Grouper, while the others, appear on Persevere; a befitting title for Neville’s first new grip of songs following his hiatus. Three songs comprise Persevere: The Dawn Chorus of Kina, an ode to (alleged) singing sea urchin, and covers from two vision-sharing kindred spirits: The Axemen (Pacific Ocean) and Michael Hurley (Open Up). Persevere is released in an edition of 500 copies, housed in textured paper sleeves adorned with Neville’s signature dog drawings.” Charming.

TELEPATHE – "PLAYS AT THE SMELL" [VIDEO]

Saturday, July 11th, 2009
Don’t know what to write about this one. The video speaks more than a thousand words. Yep, Videothing brings you Telepathe speaking through their foreheads.

Crystal Stilts, on the other hand, prefer speaking through trees. More stuff like this over at the Videothing site.

ROMAN SOLDIERS – WARMER 7"

Friday, July 10th, 2009

2009, Captured Tracks
01. Warmer; 02. Yuppie Fires

Speaking of Mike Sniper’s side projects, here’s the first single from Roman Soldiers, a new collab between Blank Dogs and Gary War. A very dark and spacey affair. Lots of vocal effects and distortion. Yum.
