UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FLORIDA – OCEAN SUNBIRDS

2009, Little Furry Things
01. Soft White Watts; 02. Sun Glyphed Comanche Kissed; 03. Capri Sun Caravan; 04. Startled By Sparkling Water (feat. Alaskas); 05. Ambien Fort; 06. Haze Coasting; 07. Moon Bungalow (feat. All the Lights Are On In Malibu

Universal Studios Florida is the two-manned intergalactic starship of Jason Baxter & Kyle Hargus hailing from Seattle, WA. Inside you’ll find dense tropical percussion with golden, shining synth lines in an ambient valley where big beat drops are just around every corner.” That hyped beach music goes techno, which is not a bad thing. At all.
USF’s debut EP appears to have sold out. But you can still get the album. Also, there are some nice USF videos over here.

PRE – HOPE FREAKS

Monday, June 29th, 2009
2009, Skin Graft
01. Gang of Wire; 02. Haircut, Tacos; 03. The Junk; 04. Why Be Wives; 05. Teenage Lakes; 06. Interlude; 07. The Love Crunch; 08. Cold; 09. Hope Freaks; 10. New Prints; 11. Sleep Weak

“Hope Freaks like it’s predecessor Epic Fits clocks in at just 20 minutes and sees the band playing like crazed animals possessed by their own awesome display of precision percussion, shrill guitars and chunky ass bass-bombs all topped of by Keeks Matsuura insane screeching’s. This is a wild album that brings to mind a ton of different bands; Aidswolf (i think they might have put out some kind of split tour L.P together), Erasa Errata, (leeds locals…Beards), Arab on Radar (…) Engineered by Steve Albini (looks like he’s been getting some decent clients in recently) and mastered by the mighty Weasal Walter of XBXRX and The flying Luttenbachers fame.” Buy it. SUN ARAW – HEAVY DEEDS

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

2009, Not Not Fun
01. Heavy Deeds; 02. Hustle and Bustle; 03. The Message; 04. Get Low; 05. All Night Long

The solo universe of Long Beach psychonauts Magic Lantern’s guitarist Cameron Stallones.
“…Heavy Deeds is the latest dubbed-out, tropical psych missive from this far-out collective, featuring an increasingly mature approach to experimental queasiness, which on this occasion is reminiscent of fellow solar travellers Sunburned Hand Of The Man knocking heads together with Sun Ra. There’s some incredible wah-wah funk to be found here, jostling amongst a barrage of synapse-frazzling sound effects, clunking semi-tribal rhythms and gospel drone.” Get it!

TH’ FAITH HEALERS – THE PEEL SESSIONS + QUICKSPACE

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

2005, Ba Da Bing
1.Hippy Hole; 2. This Time; 3. Reptile Smile; 4. S.O.S. (ABBA cover); 5. My Loser; 6. Moona Inna Joona; 7. I’m Ready (never released); 8. Get the F**k Out Of My Face (never released); 9. See Saw; 10. Bulkhead (never released); 11. Sparklingly Chime; 12. Serge (never released); 13. Ooh La La (never released); 14. Curly Lips; 15. New Number Two (never released); 16. Without You (Badfinger/Harry Nilsson cover);

We had the chance to catch the reunited Faith Healers at this year’s Primaverasound festival and they’re definitely a band worth checking out. They formed in London in 1990 and released three albums over the course of four years. Their sound is kinda minimal with definite krautrock influences, yet underneath you can expect to find some solid pop melodies.

Reptile Smile
Curly Lips

After Th’ Faith Healers disbanded guitarist Tom Cullinan, who did the majority of the songwriting, went on to form Quickspace. They played fuzzy experimental pop and kept a low profile releasing everything on their own label, the now defunct Kitty Kitty Corp. Check out these real pop gems.

THE BEETS – SPIT ON THE FACE OF PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT TO BE COOL

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

2009, Captured Tracks
01. Happy But on My Way; 02. I Wish I Knew How My Life Should Be; 03. My Bones, My Flesh and Me; 04. For You; 05. The Devil; 06. Eat No Dick; 07. No Blood; 08. What Did I Do; 09. Go Away; 10. Broken English; 11. Why Should I Live If I Won’t Fit; 12. Hoy

I thought Women or Girls were difficult to google, but a name like the Beets comes with its own set of hurdles by also being that of an apparently much more popular fictional band from Nickelodeon. Anywho, churning out their own brand of 60s garage rock, they’ve come up with this debut. Here’s some more unintelligible goodness, this time from Queens.

LEMONADE – BIG WEEKEND 12"

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

2009, Sunday Best
Side A 1. Big Weekend, 2. L-Vis 1990 Remix; Side B 1. Delorean Remix, 2. Sunday Best Remix

Lemonade’s debut album is going to see its UK release on August 3 preceeded by the single Big Weekend coming out on July 20 featuring a remix by L-Vis 1990 (the newest addition to Diplo’s Mad Decent collective). If you’ve somehow managed to miss this band you can head on over to ill-fmrd and try to dig up something there. Hint-hint. In the meantime check out a couple of rad remixes these dudes came up with.

Cale Parks – Early On (Lemonade Remix)

Faunts – Feel. Love. Thinking. Of. (Lemonade Remix)

You can download a whole bunch of remixes of Lemonade tracks on RCRD LBL for free, individually or all together. I am especially diggin’ that Delorean remix. Get the single here. Or try the Pure Groove 7″ with the Kid 606 remix. Their shirts are purdy too. Check them out at MySpace.

01. Highly Evolved; 02. Takes so little

Brilliant Colors is an all girl three piece from San Francisco doing catchy fuzzy pop with a bit of a punk attitude.

Unfortunately neither of these are available any longer, however Highly Evolved and the out of print Make-a-Mess single will be combined on a 12″ EP coming this summer with one exclusive track on Captured Tracks.

WOODS – TO CLEAN [VIDEO]

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

New Woods video. “In the song’s Michael La Burt-directed video, the guys give way to lusty ritualistic over-eating and band-on-band violence, but otherwise they have nothing to be ashamed about.” Cute. Woods @ Myspace.

THE TEST PATTERNS – BLACKOUT

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

2009, Tic Tac Totally
01. Back To You; 02. Crazy Over You; 03. High Tension; 04. Missing Reasons; 05. Situations; 06. Blackout; 07. Summer Days

“Rapid-fire power-pop-punk from Pittsburgh fusing Rip-Off-era sounds, late 70′s punk and hardcore with some bubblegum goop to stick it on your brain. … Dan (Radiobeats, Rot Shit) and Yago (Gito Gito Hustler) split male/female vocals while servin up dual guitar layers adding up to more sharp little candy fragments than this lollipop I busted on your head. Solid bass & drums tie it all up in a focused, aggressive sound under the pop coat.”
7 songs in less than 16 minutes + catchy as hell. Get it here. Myspace.

EAT SKULL/GANGLIANS – SPLIT 7"

Friday, June 19th, 2009

2009, Dulc-i-Tone Records
01. Eat Skull – Double Wasted; 02. Eat Skull – Leave the Universe; 03. Ganglians – Lost Words

This came out a couple of months ago but I apparently missed it. The Ganglians track can also be found on their album. Eat Skull tracks are pretty good, too.
“At first listen, you might find this an odd pairing, but soon it will make sense why the ‘Skull has taken GANGLIANS on tour multiple times. Deep down beneath the thin layer of nego-scuzz, Eat Skull share’s Ganglians knack for great damaged pop. Two songs from Eat Skull’s Sick to Death sessions – one a quick punk sprinter, the other a woozy pop epic. Ganglians make their vinyl debut with an undeniable hit in ‘Lost Words’. Great stoned-strum-pop goodness.” Get it.

FEVER RAY – TRIANGLE WALKS [VIDEO]

Friday, June 19th, 2009

2009, Rabid Records/Mute

01. Triangle Walks (Tiga’s 1-2-3-4 remix); 02. Triangle Walks (James Rutledge remix); 03. Triangle Walks (Tora Vinter remix)

In case someone missed it, Fever Ray is the solo project of Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of the Swedish electro act The Knife.

Triangle Walks is the new single from one of the best records of the year so far. It’s interesting how tracks that might sound dark on the record are easily turned into sunny electro-pop gems by some remixes (see also D. Lissivik’s take on When I Grow up).
The single is out on June 23d. You can find some more remixes on digital version. Fever Ray’s official site.

There’s also a new video directed by Mikel Cee Karlsson. Check out the other two Fever Ray videos if you haven’t already.
